FAQ

  • What is Effective Altruism?

Effective altruism is a philosophy and community focused on maximising the good you can do through your career, projects, and donations.

    For more information, see https://www.effectivealtruism.org.

  • Do I need to be highly engaged with EA to use the service?

It is not necessary to refer to oneself as an effective altruist or be highly engaged with EA. However, we expect users of this service to adhere to the Principles of Effective Altruism.

  • Why are candidates in the directory anonymous?

Firstly, hiding names and email addresses provides candidates with a level of data privacy. The process of sharing contact details is manual and includes a basic check to ensure that the organisation requesting the information is legitimate.

Secondly, anonymous screening is thought to reduce socio-economic background, ethnicity and gender biases.

Finally, the EA Good Governance Project is keen to ensure it is an effective use of resources. Data points such as the number of organisations using the service, the number of board candidates identified through the service and the number of successful board recruitments are critical to this evaluation.

  • How is the project organised and governed?

Currently, the EA Good Governance Project is an unincorporated non-profit controlled and operated by Grayden Reece-Smith. The service is provided for free and has some limited costs that are covered by him.

If the EA Good Governance Project proves to be a success, it may become incorporated and put in place its own good governance!

  • I disagree with some of your advice. Can you change it?

This is a topic where there is no definitive right answer, so please do get in touch to share your thoughts. We are keen for the content on this site to evolve and incorporate the best of the community’s insights.

  • Why do I have to login to view the candidate directory?

We require organisations to log in to view the candidate directory. Signing up is free, but provides an extra layer of data security.
